First, bring a water sample to us at Galati Pools & Spas for a complete water analysis. This will insure your pool water is properly balanced and contains no hidden problems. The pH, total alkalinity and calcium hardness should all be within proper ranges.
Next, shock your pool with Smart Shock or Burn Out 3. In order to maintain adequate chlorine levels put one or two fresh BioGuard Smart Sticks or Pucks in your skimmer or automatic feeder, and continue to run your pump and filter as normal.
Finally, to prevent algae from taking over, add 10 ounces of BioGuard Back-Up 2 Algae Inhibitor per 15,000 gallons of water for each week you’ll be away. For example; if you have a 17,500 gallon pool and you’re going to be away for 2 weeks add 24 ounces. Note: if you see some foaming, don’t worry, this is normal for such a procedure and will dissipate with time.
These guidelines should help you minimize any algae “takeover” while you’re away. However, every pool is different and conditions vary, so it is always a good idea to have a neighbor keep an eye on your pool. If you’re planning to be away for an extended period of time, you might want to arrange for our vacation watch service. Our service personnel will look in on your pool from time to time keeping it in tip-top shape. For more information or to schedule our vacation watch service give us a call at (845) 564-0555.
