A Step-By-Step Guide to Cleaning Your Pool This Fall

Automatic pool cleaners

Now that fall is here, you probably won’t be using your swimming pool anymore this year. That means it is time to clean it and get it ready for the coming winter so it will be ready for you the next summer. Here’s a handy step-by-step guide to cleaning and preparing your pool for the colder season.

1. Start With Skimming

Grab your skimmer net and clear away leaves, twigs, and any other floating debris. Do this daily if possible. It not only keeps the pool looking better but also prevents clogs that can strain your filter and pump.

2. Empty the Baskets

Check both your skimmer and pump baskets regularly. A clogged basket makes your pump work harder and cuts down water flow. Keeping them clean helps make everything run better.

3. Brush and Vacuum

Take a brush to the walls, ladders, and steps. This loosens any dirt and algae before it sticks. Once you’ve brushed, vacuum the floor thoroughly in order to remove what has settled at the bottom.

4. Balance and Shock the Water

Test your water’s pH, alkalinity, and chlorine. Proper balance keeps your water safe, comfortable, and clear. In fall, add a shock treatment to kill the bacteria and stop the algae fueled by decaying leaves.

5. Clean the Filter

Depending on your configuration, either rinse your cartridge or backwash your sand or your DE filter. A clean filter means cleaner water and better efficiency.

6. Inspect Equipment

Take a quick look at pumps, heaters, and other parts for leaks or wear. Catching small issues now saves you from big repair bills later.

7. Prepare for Closing

If you’re shutting down for winter, lower the water level just below the skimmer. This prevents freeze damage when the cold sets in.

8. Cover the Pool

Finally, secure a strong pool cover. It blocks debris, keeps critters out, and makes opening next season so much easier.

9. Perform a Final Inspection

Once you’ve closed your pool down for the fall, walk around and make a final inspection. Again, if you see any signs of damage or anything strange, contact a pool repair specialist to fix the problem before it gets too cold outside.
